The winery was purchased by Beringer in 2000. Castello di Gabbiano is known for their Chianti and their line of Super Tuscan wines.
Castello di Gabbiano is located in San Casciano Val di Pesa, in the Chianti region of Tuscany. The property is spread over more than 250 acres, with 136 planted for grapes. They also have another property at San Donato in Poggio with 32 acres of vineyards, 15 of which are dedicated to Chianti. The wine is aged in antique cellars below the castle.
Winemaker Giancarlo Roman was born near Veneto and has lived in Tuscany since 1970. He received his degree in enology and viticulture from the Conegliano Institute in Veneto. He has worked in Tuscany for thirty years and has worked for Castello di Gabbiano since 1990. Before joining the team, he worked for the Cantina Sociale Le Chiantigiane and consulted for wineries associated with the group. He began as a overseer of preparation for all of the wines and now supervises the winemaking for the entire winery. He was also the President of the Italian Enologist Association for Tuscany until 2001.
The varietals grown by the vineyard are Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Colorino. The winery produces a Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, two Super Tuscan wines that blend varietals to produce their Alleanza and Bellezza, Gavius, Rose, and Vin Santo.
Fun facts: the tower at Castello di Gabbiano was built in 1100 AD. The winery also produces its own extra virgin olive oil from olive trees grown on the property, grappa made from the vineyards, and their own vinegar.
