During the 1700s, Chile began to make a name for itself in wine.  Chilean wines have been influenced by old world flavors and techniques, with wine merchants traveling to France to supplement their knowledge.  Chilean wines are unique, they are phylloxera-free and many of the vines are older than those in Europe.  The vineyards of Chilean wines are concentrated near the central and southern regions which features warm, dry days and cool nights that help to maintain the necessary acidity in the grapes.  The regions for Chilean wines include Atacama, Coquimbo, Aconcagua, Valle Central, and Southern Chile.  More than twenty varietals are cultivated for Chilean wines, most traced to Franc and Spain.  The most widely planted varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere.
