The principle white grape in and around the town of Gavi in the southeastern province of Alessandria is the third most important white grape behind Moscato and Arnies in Piemonte Italy. Cortese has become quite fashionable in Italy producing delicate racy dry white wines with a slightly oily texture that is cut by crisp acidity and hints of lime and citrus fruits in its aromas and flavors. This late maturing variety can be very difficult to cultivate and vinify in the cool climates but in the Fox Mountain Vineyard in the hills above the Russian river in Mendocino County, Cortese has found a happy home. Enjoy this wine with grilled fish or deep fried seafood such as calamari.
