Native to France, Merlot is one of the major components of Bordeaux wines. Today, Merlot wines are widely produced in France, Chile, Italy, New Zealand and the US. Merlot wines tend to have a smooth, juicy flavor that imparts notes of berry, cherry, plum, and currant. Merlot wines are often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to make wines that are smoother and rounder. Large and thin-skinned, Merlot can be a precarious crop since it is highly susceptible to frost and bird related damage. Merlot wines are lower in tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, and are best enjoyed slightly below room temperature.
