Classified as a first growth vineyard in 1855, the gravelly soil continues to produce top quality vintages in Bordeaux. The vineyard has been growing wine grapes since 1620, with owners continuing the tradition of excellence in winemaking. The soil, microclimate, and vine direction all contribute to the consistently high quality vintages from this area. Wines are matured in oak barrels, as is traditional for the region, but break from tradition with the arrangement of the barrels into circular patterns in the cellar. As the wines are given the opportunity to age, winemakers are waiting for the harmonious balance between wine and wood. Rothschild wines are monitored to maintain the taste of the grape, making sure that the oak barrels only add depth to the wines and do not overpower the delicate but substantial quality of the wine grapes.
