Saint Julien

If you’re planning to head to France to search for amour, then make sure to rediscover your love for wine at Saint Julien. Located at the northwest of Bordeaux, the region is known as one of the four largest wine growing appellations of the Medoc.

Saint Julien has over 26 vineyards that offer the best aromatic, harmonious and well balanced red wines in the area. Thus, your love for wine is definitely bound to get a boost at Saint Julien.

The wines of Saint Julien are distinct from those provided by the commune’s neighboring areas. The reason for this is the quality of the soil in which the grapes are grown in. The soil of Saint Julien allows the vines to weave their way to the center of the earth to get the nutrients they require while keeping them safe and warm despite the cool winds of the Atlantic.

If you’re interested in checking out some of the best Bordeaux wineries in Saint Julien, here are three Saint Julien chateaux that you must visit:

1. Chateau Leoville-Las Cases: If you’re looking for a historical spot in Saint Julien, then this is the place for you. Built before the French Revolution, this Saint Julien winery is classified as one of the fifteen Second Growths in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The offerings of this Saint Julien chateau have also ranked sixth among ten French and Californian red wines in the “Judgment of Paris” wine contest.

2. Chateau Gruaud-Larose: Of all the Saint Julien chateaux, Chateau Gruaud-Larose is the most recent. As one of the famed Second Growths, this Saint Julien winery spreads over 200 acres and mainly grows Cabernet Sauvignon along with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec.

3. Chateau Beychevelle: This is one of the few Fourth Growths located in Saint Julien. This Saint Julien winery is one of the richest in classical architecture, which is why visitors of Saint Julien must visit it. The history of this Saint Julien winery is very interesting, and you’ll enjoy hearing how the Admiral Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette used to force boats to lower their sails as they passed in front of this chateau.

With that, we come to the end of this list of Saint Julien chateaux you have to visit. There are more wineries that you can visit once you arrive at Saint Julien. However, make sure you check out there three first for the ultimate wine tasting experience.
