How to Buy Wine Glasses
It is important to choose the best wine glasses to enjoy your wine to the fullest. Here are some tips to help you buy wine glasses.
Wine glassware manufacturers would have you believe that you need to buy wine glasses designed for almost every different kind of wine. They often suggest you buy wine glasses with large tulips for Cabernet; large bulbous glasses for Pinot Noir; larger and rounder glasses for Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. Is this really true?
Here’s the bottom line. You don’t need to buy wine glasses for every varietal, but you do need to buy at least four. As a rule, buy wine glasses that give the wines lots of room in the glass to breathe.
Buy Wine Glasses for Table Wines
For white dry table wines buy wine glasses that are at least 12 ounces. For red dry table wines buy wine glasses that are at least 24 ounces. For all dry table wines buy wine glasses that always curve inward at the top to allow for vigorous swirling. Never fill a glass more than 1/3 for dry table wines.
Buy Wine Glasses for Dessert Wines
For dessert wines (Port, Sherry, Madeira, Marsala) buy wine glasses that are smaller and do not require headspace since most dessert wines are not as aromatic. Since swirling is not required, glassware for dessert wines may be filled to the top. There are exceptions: a few dessert wines are highly aromatic (Sauternes, Tokaji Aszu, sweet Rieslings). These wines are best served in standard white wine glasses.
Buy Wine Glasses for Sparkling Wines
For champagne and other sparkling wines buy wine glasses with the standard flute shape. Standard flutes show off the bubbles best and are most commonly used.
