Wine Region - Gascony
History
The Gascony wine region was originally inhabited by the Basque people. In 1152, the English crown acquired the area, producing an automatic trade for Gascony wine to England and abroad.
Classifications
Beginning in 1935, French wines became subject to classification standards. Now all French wines can be broadly categorized as table wines, Vin de Table, or QWPSR. All Gascony wines fall under these French wine regulations.
Geography
The Gascony wine region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The chalky soil of the Gascony wine region is ideal for the cultivation of grapes.
Regions
Madiran is known for the production of dry white Gascony wines. Armagnac produces light, fruity Gascony wines. Floc de Gascongne offers velvety, floral red Gascony wines.
Varietals
The most popular varietal grown for Gascony wine is Tannat, a high tannin grape. Other Gascony wine varietals include Pacherenc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche.
