Archaeology suggests that Spanish wines were cultivated as early as 4000 BC.  Cava, a sparkling Spanish wine, became popular in the later nineteenth century and increased interest in Spanish wines.  Spanish wines are subject to the rules of the Denominación de Origen (DO) system, which was modernized in 1970 and shares characteristics with French and Italian wine regulation systems.  Table Spanish wines are labeld Vino De Mesa,  regional Spanish wines are labeled Vino de la Tierra, quality wines are labeled Denominacion de Origen (DO), while high quality wines are labeled Denominacion de Origen Calificada (DOC).  Varied terrains mean a large variety of climates, rainfall averages, and temperatures throughout the country.  There are hundreds of regions for  Spanish wines.  Some of the best known Spanish wine regions include Cordoba, Cava, Ribera del Duero, and Rioja.  The most popular Spanish wine varietals include Tempranillo, Albarino, Palomino, and Graciano.
