The production of South African wines started in the 1600s.  Constantia, a South African wine estate established by Dutch settlers, became well known throughout Europe for dessert wines and helped to improve the reputation for all South African wines.  In the 1970s, South Africa established a "Wines of Origin" regulation that defines the labeling of South African wines.  The South African Wines of Origin qualification is only given for a region where 100% of the grapes are grown. The regions for South African wines share a Mediterranean-like climate with many other winemaking countries.  Major South African wine regions include Stellenbosch, Paarl. and Cape Point.  Many common international varietals are cultivated for South African wines.  Top varietals include Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colombard, Shiraz, and Pinotage.
